Forwards to local victories at the May elections

Dear Friends,

We are now just a few weeks away from crucial national and local elections. Paddy Ashdown said at conference in Liverpool that we should be upbeat, for there is all to play for in terms of votes.

Although our national poll ratings have been consistently below 10%, these figures mask local trends, and the fact that we usually rise in the run-up to polling day, as we remind voters of our achievements.

In Labour-facing seats in the Midlands and North, we are braced for losing some MPs, but in the Southeast, facing the incumbent Tories, we could even snatch seats such as nearby Maidstone.

This is why every leaflet delivered, and door knocked on, and candidate stood, and every e-mail message answered, and Tweet sent, will be absolutely vital for our success this May.

Locally, we can remind voters of the Conservatives ghastly track record of trying to concrete over our precious allotments and other open spaces.

Nationally, we have managed to get our policies into coalition legislation, whether for taking the more of the lower paid out of tax, giving more freedom to spend your pension, providing free school meals for primary pupils, an increase in the pupil premium, shared parental leave entitlements, and firm commitments to increased spending for both mental and physical health.

I am very proud of these considerable achievements in government, and I hope you will help me to take these positive messages out to the voters of Sevenoaks and Swanley over the coming weeks, together with our excellent and experienced local council candidates, for a truly winning team.
