In May 2021, there are elections for the Kent County Council. Sevenoaks West Division covers Riverhead to Westerham, with Brasted, Chipstead, Sundridge, Halstead, Toy's Hill and the surrounding areas.
Our Liberal Democrat candidate for the county seat is Tom Mackay. Here is his brief introduction:
My name is Tom Mackay. I am a farmer's boy, born in Northumberland before moving at the age of 5 to the Black Isle near Inverness. I studied Law at Aberdeen University, qualified as a Solicitor in Scotland and England and became head of legal department first at 3i plc and then at the London Stock Exchange. Thereafter I became a partner in London and New York international law firms working mainly for entrepreneurs and their investors (dot com era) and then for state owned energy companies and latterly for investment managers, brokers and hedge funds. Since last December, I have been gradually winding down my private work and moving towards an active retirement.
I live in Toys Hill where I love our surrounding woodlands. I am married and have two daughters and a dog. My education includes an LLB(Hons), MBA and a Diploma in Finance and Accounting. I have co-authored several law books and served on Law Society, UK Government and EU law committees.
If this biography makes me sound more a Tory than a Lib Dem, I would say that my life experiences have ensured I could never vote Conservative. Whilst working in London in the 1980s and 1990s, I walked to trains at Waterloo or Charing Cross past the homeless in cardboard city. I could never understand how a government could be so uncaring. Also, people who vote Tory sometimes openly admit they vote in a way that is best for them individually and not necessarily best for society.
