A New Year's Message for 2021

Here is a message from local LIb Dem activist Sharan Virk and West Kent Young Liberals (WKYL). If you are a party member aged 26 or younger, you can join WKYL by writing to this email address: wkyl@sevenoakslibdems.org.uk

Kent is a special place: we are the Garden of England. We also form a bridge between our nation's capital and act as the gateway to our European neighbours. We are a County of connectivity and diversity.
Gravesham has the highest population of BAME residents in Kent, so the events of this year unearthing how we as a civilisation understand race relations, as well as human rights, are critical to us. The Liberal Democrats in Gravesham are committed to ensuring that minority groups are represented on all levels especially when they contribute extensively to our society.
We want to take this opportunity to express our gratitude and highlight the work of the Sikh community of Gravesham who delivered meals throughout the year, providing a much needed source of nourishment and hope in difficult times - despite being part of a wider group of BAME individuals who were disproportionately effected by the Coronavirus. This statistic that came to light is unacceptable and our MPs are backing the inquiry to find out, as a country, where we have gone wrong. For a town like Gravesham, an answer to this question is a form of much needed justice.
When it comes to such issues, there is always more work to be done and we want to tackle these issues with the help of our youth. This year local young activists including me set up a young liberal group in West Kent and we are eager to discuss how we can do better as a society to educate ourselves on issues that impact our communities and fundamentally do better. We hope to improve our communities and ensure that constituents are living successful, enriched and most importantly, happy lives. Undoubtedly, 2021 will bring its own challenges, but with our collective commitment to do better, we welcome the New Year and will see you soon!
