Gareth Willis: A Brighter Future for Sevenoaks and Swanley

Gareth Willis

Gareth Willis, Lib Dem for Sevenoaks and Swanley

Gareth is an experienced teacher in Sevenoaks, working with young people to broaden their horizons. He is convinced that a Britain leading in Europe is best for their future. It is also the best way to build a strong economy, better public services, a fairer society and a more sustainable and a safer world.

If elected to government, the Liberal Democrats are determined to use the £50bn Remain Bonus to bring our country back together. Our demomcracy needs to be healed. We will invest and support our public services. We will support lifelong learning and working families, and invest in Mental Health services as a matter of urgency.

Acting on Climate Change

We need more determined action to stop climate change

Government has made the right noises on climate action - but it must move much faster on reducing energy wasted in homes and transport. Our local councillors are putting zero carbon at the heart of local planning. Can you help me to do it at Westminster?

Affordable Housing

Affordable housing needs a plan backed by all our communities.

We need homes for local people who live and work here, with well-planned transport, schools and health services. Government and our district council are squabbling over this. As your next MP I will make them listen to you.

Government should make laws, not break laws.

In Parliament Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis admitted that planned Northern Ireland customs legislation "does break international law". A Conservative Government ready to break international law shows how its moral standards, and common sense, have vanished under Boris Johnson. Tearing up the UK's proud history of promoting the rule of law is destroying our reputation on the world stage. It shreds our ability to promote British values of rule of law and justice in the world.

Sevenoaks District Council's plan for Sevenoaks recovery will kill the town. That's the verdict of shoppers and business people on the District Leader's plan to march people up one side of High Street and London Road and down the other, published today for a decision tonight.

Instead of creating more space for shoppers to queue outside shops, to pass each other and for visitors to feel safe, anyone on foot will be crammed onto existing narrow pavements in order to allow traffic to flow freely, on its way to out of town retail parks.

The Liberal Democrats have written to Laura Trott urging her to "end the distractions" and support calls for scandal-hit Dominic Cummings to go, so the country can focus on the coronavirus emergency.

In the letter, Liberal Democrat spokesperson Gareth Willis for Sevenoaks and Swanley urges all Conservative MPs to "put the interests of your constituents first, end the distractions and join the growing number of Conservative MPs who are calling for Dominic Cummings to go."

Every day, over 30 people are unnecessarily in our local acute hospitals because their non-acute care can't be transferred elsewhere within the NHS or social care. More generally, most of the pressure on our hospitals comes from patients who would be better cared for somewhere else. This blocks further patient admissions, causing delays in A&E and waits for ambulances who can't go to the next call.

Though the national results were extremely disappointing, with too many Liberal Democrat target seats missed by a narrow margin, the local results for the four constituencies within the Sevenoaks, Dartford and Gravesham Liberal Democrats area provided some cheer despite none being a target seat enjoying any central support:

Conservatives didn't show up for either the Party Leaders debate or the local debate on Climate Change. Their council green policies have been inadequate. Conservatives are not taking this issue seriously at National or local level. They are out of step with the electorate and young people who understand the gravity of the situation.

Last week, YouGov published its huge MRP poll of the country. This poll has legendary status after it correctly predicted a hung Parliament in 2017 as well as the surprise results in Canterbury and Kensington.

The poll shows that the Liberal Democrats are clear challengers to the Tories in Sevenoaks well ahead of Labour who are lagging on 14%.

Liberal Democrat candidate, Gareth Willis says:

"It's great to see YouGov confirming what we have heard on so many doorsteps. I am the main challenger to the former Cameron political adviser parachuted in by the Tories. I urge Labour and Green voters to lend me their vote for this crucial election."
